About 6 months ago a friend invited me to visit her in Estonia. She actually lives in Atlanta, and has for 10 years, but she visits Estonia every summer for about three weeks. I have been telling her I would visit for the past three years, so it was finally time for me to bite the bullet. She mentioned that the best way to get there is through Amsterdam, so of course I had to make a pit stop!
DAY 1: Amsterdam | aka Bike Heaven
Amsterdam is completely different than I had pictured in my mind. I am not even sure what I pictured now, but it is a beautiful city full of life and culture. I would definitely go back and regret not having spent more time. I was there a day and a half and this was not long enough. I would recommend three to four days.
Of course, if you are going to Amsterdam you MUST visit the Heineken Brewery where you can also see the Heineken Clydesdales. I had no idea they existed! You also MUST take a tour of the red light district because the history is quite interesting. We ended up using Sandemans New Europe Amsterdam and they were awesome. Ironically, we met people from ATLANTA, which seems crazy half way across the world! We also met some other really cool travelers and ended up hanging out with the people from our tour the rest of the night.
DAY 2: Amsterdam | too many sights
The next day we really tried to fit too much into one day. One of my highlights was the three-hour walking tour we took with the same tour company and stopping at the little gem V&D La Place Restaurant Amsterdam for a delicious bite to eat. We ended in front of the Ann Frank House where I took this photo opp with my kigo pais by the beautiful canal. I wore my kigos the entire trip! The best travel shoes ever - super comfortable and durable.
A little tip…if you want to visit the Ann Frank House in Amsterdam you definitely need to book your entry beforehand, and probably when you book your trip as they fill up a month or more in advance. There are two hour+ lines if you don’t pre-book, where if you do pre-book you go right in.
The other highlight of Amsterdam was the boat ride. I would defintely rent a paddle boat as it is really fun tooling around the canals solo. Needless to say after Ann Frank, the three-hour walking tour, boat trip and Van Gogh, I was done! It was a bit too much for one day and we defintely did not see everything this town has to offer!
Until next time…
